GreenSpikes & EcoStrikes: Empowering Sustainability Through Sports by Aikaterini Rentzela and Maria Goreti Alves
Climate change, pollution and loss of biodiversity form a triple severe threat to ecosystems, human well-being and generally our future. Effectively tackling these interconnected environmental challenges demands strategies that promote sustainability and resilience. Through a Project-Based Learning( PBL) method students addressed the real environmental issues and tried through their collaborative outputs to develop a long-term commitment to ecological responsibility.
In the eTwinning project“ Green Goals & Eco Serves”, through a multidisciplinary approach, students explored the guiding question:“ How can we use teamwork to address real environmental challenges and generate positive impact?” By turning team sports and games into learning tools, students engaged in tackling the triple planetary crisis applying the key values of cooperation, fairness, strategy, teamwork and collective responsibility.
Learners were guided to elaborate complex ecological issues and adopt sustainable habits. The designed activities have focused on the Green Comp areas of“ 1. Embodying Sustainability Values”,“ 2. Embracing complexity in sustainability”,“ 3. Envisioning Sustainable Futures”,“ 4. Acting for sustainability”. The competences addressed and the descriptors integrated were valuing sustainability, supporting fairness and promoting nature in the 1 st area, systems’ thinking, critical thinking and problem framing in the 2 nd area, futures literacy, adaptability and exploratory thinking in the 3 rd area and political agency, collective action and individual initiative in the 4 th area( Green Comp, 2022).
Students not only explored and embraced sustainability through sports but also recognized the importance of our roles in changing attitudes and behaviors towards global issues documenting them into collaborative final products such as interactive sustainability boards and the sustainability roadmap.
