Beyond Borders Together We Shine – A Bridge Between Cultures by Andrada Muntean
Children of primary school age are curious and like to ask questions, discover new things, and make friends. These qualities make the primary school years the perfect time to introduce intercultural learning. When children meet peers from other countries, they do not focus on differences; instead, they are eager to discover what they have in common.
This idea inspired our eTwinning project“ Beyond Borders Together We Shine”, which brought together 17 schools from Romania, Greece, Türkiye, Portugal, Spain, Tunisia, and the Republic of Moldova. Throughout the school year, pupils worked together on creative activities that encouraged them to communicate, collaborate, and learn from one another. Step by step, they discovered a little about each culture and learned that respect, kindness, and friendship are values shared by everyone.
For the pupils, the project was an opportunity to learn about other countries and about their own country. It became a chance to work with children of the same age, exchange ideas, solve challenges together, and build friendships beyond the classroom. In this way, intercultural learning became something they experienced.
Activities that connected young learners Each activity was designed to encourage children to interact, cooperate, and discover each other ' s cultures directly from their international partners.
The project began with activities that helped children get to know one another. Through the“ Interview between students”, they asked questions about school life, hobbies, favourite books, and traditions. Although they lived in different countries, they realised that they also had many things in common. These conversations helped them become more confident in communicating in English, while at the same time developing their curiosity and respect for their peers.
Creativity played an important role throughout the project. In mixed international teams, pupils designed the“ Heroes of values”, creating superheroes whose powers represented kindness, courage, respect, and cooperation. While discussing ideas and making decisions together, the children discovered that these values are appreciated everywhere, regardless of culture or language.
