The STEM and Culture Journey of eTwinning Coffee by Filachti Stefanaki
Innovation in primary education often stems from connecting daily life with the world of science. In the school year 2025 – 2026, the multidisciplinary project " Make ' N Taste in the Light of Science " brought together European schools to explore a universally recognized element of cultural heritage: coffee. Through this collaborative initiative, ten-year-old pupils stepped into the shoes of young researchers, bridging the gap between classroom curriculum and real-world scientific inquiry in an international framework.
The main goal was to transform our pupils from passive learners into active investigators who use scientific methods to evaluate cultural habits.
Exploring coffee through a STEM lens The project introduced a creative, multidisciplinary curriculum that combined biology, chemistry, and culture, tailored beautifully for young learners. The students investigated the botanical journey of the coffee bean, analyzed chemical profiles, and studied brewing methods such as the V60. By focusing on hands-on STEM experiments, the pupils explored how variables like water temperature, grind size, and extraction time affect the final flavor results.
This pedagogical approach promoted independent research and small-group work, transforming abstract scientific concepts into tangible, exciting discoveries. Students kept detailed scientific logs, measured water ratios precisely, and learned how to apply the scientific method to a beverage consumed daily around the world.
Digital collaboration and technology integration Working in a secure digital environment, the partner schools engaged in interactive tasks that went far beyond simple communication. Technology enriched every phase of the project, with a strong emphasis on data protection and copyright regulations, managed through dedicated e-safety practices. Ten-year-old pupils from different countries collaborated to conduct online surveys, design interactive materials, and analyze scientific data together.
Using a diverse array of Web 2.0 tools like Canva, Google Forms, and Symbaloo tutorials, they combined their findings. Pupils cooperated in real time using a shared Miro board to visualize their experiments and brainstorm ideas. Finally,
