In addition to Goal 4, mentioned above, Goal 10 concerns the reduction of inequalities and is related to the promotion of social inclusion and the tackling of exclusion. Goal 16, which concerns peace, justice and strong institutions and is linked to the cultivation of values, rights and active citizenship, while Goal 17, which concerns partnerships to achieve the goals, is reflected in the collaboration of students and teachers from different countries within the framework of eTwinning. Therefore, the Sustainable Development Goals are not only a theoretical framework but are directly linked to the actions and learning outcomes of this specific project.
The new kindergarten curriculum and the integration of the 17 Global Goals The cultivation of European citizenship from kindergarten is a fundamental goal of modern education. In an increasingly interconnected Europe and world, it is vital that children develop a sense of belonging to a wider community from an early age, adopt European values( democracy, equality, respect for human rights) and understand their role as active and responsible citizens. The kindergarten curriculum provides the ideal framework for this cultivation. Through play, cooperation, experiential learning and exploration, children develop social skills, empathy, critical thinking and respect for diversity – key characteristics of active citizenship( IEP, 2023).
The integration of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals( SDGs) further strengthens this process. The SDGs, which cover issues such as poverty, health,
education, environment and peace, offer a universal framework for understanding global challenges and developing a sense of shared responsibility. Understanding, in particular, the importance of quality education for all( Goal 4) contributes to the formation of a citizenry that respects and defends the rights of all people, regardless of origin or gender. Ultimately, the systematic cultivation of European citizenship in kindergarten, guided by the curriculum and inspired by the 17 SDGs, shapes children who will not only be able to function in a European context, but also to actively contribute to the creation of a more just, sustainable and peaceful world for all( UN, 2015).
The connection of the above theoretical approaches to the present study is particularly important, as the program under consideration was implemented in a kindergarten attended by Roma children and utilized collaborative, experiential and digital activities. Therefore, the theoretical framework of the work serves as a basis for investigating how a European collaborative program can contribute to the development of social, communicative and digital skills, to the cultivation of active citizenship and to the enhancement of the participation and inclusion of Roma children from preschool age.
