Around The Commonwealth Kelly Chinn celebrates his birdie putt on No. 18 at James River Country Club, a fitting end to a dominating week at the VSGA Junior Stroke Play Championship. Nevins are teammates at Langley High School, a powerhouse program that has won four straight Virginia High School League championships. With Chinn’s lead at a mere two strokes in the final round, Nevins made double bogey on the par-4 11th, and Chinn made birdie, pushing the lead to five and ending any drama. 38TH VSGA SENIOR FOUR-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP Winners: Keith Decker and Roger Newsom (59-64—123) Runners-up: Three sides tied at 129 The story: Put together the winningest player in VSGA history with a two-time State Open of Virginia champion who just last year reached the final match of the U.S. Senior Amateur, and the result was predictable. Newsom put an exclamation point on the side's dominating victory at the Golden Horseshoe’s Gold Course by holing out from the fairway for eagle on No. 18 in the second round, giving him a win in his first appearance in the event and Decker his 30th VSGA title. “I’ve been looking forward to playing a two-man with Keith for a long time,” Newsom said. “I just thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s just the fact that every time I got up on the tee, I never had to worry about being out of the hole. I knew Keith was going to grind … I mean, he can crush granite with his eyelids. He’s just going to grind, and he’s never going to let you down. It’s fun to play golf that way.” Roger Newsom, left, and Keith Decker won by six strokes at The Golden Horseshoe. “I’ve been looking forward to playing a two-man with Keith for a long time, I just thoroughly enjoyed it.” —Roger Newsom Statement of Ownership, Management and Circulation (Required by 39 USC 3685) Title of Publication: Virginia Golfer.
