Army Navy CC’s David Stanford got a
little help from a good friend in the first
round of the Junior Stroke Play, held at
Winchester Country Club. Kelly Chinn,
a fellow Army Navy member fresh off
an appearance at the U.S. Junior Ama-
teur semifinals, caddied for Stanford,
helping him to a 5-under 66 on the tour-
nament’s first day. On his own the next

two days, Stanford showed great poise
in posting scores of 70 and 68 to hold off
Michael Brennan for a one-stroke victory.
Stanford, who turned 16 in early August,
said his dad has played a key role in his
ability to steady his nerves on the course.
“As a kid, I think everybody goes through
that stage where they’re a little emotional,
and they need to work on that,” Stanford
said. “He always told me to keep my head
in it. It doesn’t matter if nobody’s watching,
or if there are 100 people watching. It’s just
what you have to do to win.”

National Golf Club, defeating Alex-
andria’s Jimmy Taylor 4 and 2 in the
18-hole final. … Ryan Slonaker posted
a two-day 2-under-par 122 to win the
12-13 boys division at the 13th VSGA
Youth Championship, held at Regen-
cy at Dominion Valley in Haymarket
… For the first time since 2015 and
just the second time since 2010, the
Virginias team emerged victorious at
the annual Virginias-Carolinas Junior
Boys Matches. Led by three-point
showings from Richmonders Charlie
Kennedy and Ben Cooper, the Virgini-
as won the 37th edition of the matches
10½-5½. The Virginias team won six
of the eight singles matches.

come against Savage, who was won three
titles in her five title-match appearances, her
only two losses coming to Hoffman.
“It does feel great to be a five-time
champion,” Hoffman said afterward. “I
just can’t tell you how lucky I feel right
now. I work hard on my game. I take a lot
of lessons. I work out a lot, and the work-
ing out … I mean, right now, I feel like I
could play another 18, I feel so fresh. It
allows me to keep going.’
