Joey Jordan
49th VSGA Mid-Amateur Championship Winner: Joey Jordan( 68-71— 139) Site: Poplar Grove Golf Club The story: Steady rain left greens underwater in Saturday’ s second round. With the final groups having played only two to three holes, the round was suspended until Sunday and the event shortened to 36 holes, meaning the completed second round would stand as the final round. Jordan nearly drove the green on 18 in the final round and got up and down for birdie to beat Brandon Ramsuer and Marshall Tinsley by one stroke. Career VSGA titles: 1 Quoting: " It ' s been a tough year up until recently. I ' ve got to give a shoutout to my dad [ David ]. We went on a once-in-a-lifetime golf trip to Scotland, about a month ago. Since then, it ' s really brought me back to why I like to play golf. I was really getting down on myself, beating myself up all the time. We took the most amazing trip. We had the best time, father and son and some friends of ours. It really reminded me of why I play and why I love this game. I know he ' s not here, but he ' s going to be my first phone call. It was awesome. I ' m really happy."— Jordan The number: 2006 – The last year that the Mid-Am had been reduced to 36 holes by weather.
Career VSGA titles: 3 Quoting: " I had a sort of rocky year because I don ' t play as much tournament golf now, so I don ' t handle the tournament atmosphere well all the time. But here, my ball striking was good every day.... If you don ' t play a lot of tournament golf, you ' ve got to get back in it and get comfortable again when you have a limited history like I do. So, this was fun. I tried to let my ball striking lead me— driving it straight, irons into the middle of green, and then we ' ll see what happens."— Bailey The number: 60 +— Age range for this event, which was formed to bridge a gap between senior and super senior golf.
31st VSGA Super Senior Amateur Championship Winners: 65 +, Dave Pulk( def. Tim Vigotsky, 1 up); 70 +, Jeff Flax( def. Dayton Slater, 4 and 2); 75 +, Bill Engel( def. George Owens, 3 and 1) Site: Winchester CC The story: Vigotsky was halfway back home after stroke-play qualifying when he realized he was in a playoff for the final spot. He raced back to Winchester, survived the playoff, then won three matches before falling to Pulk. Flax won his second 70 + title of the year, having outdueled Slater in a playoff at the Super Senior Stroke Play; Engel also won his second, having previously won the Super Senior Four-Ball title in May. Career VSGA titles: Pulk( 8), Flax( 3), Engel( 5) Quoting: " It ' s an extremely difficult division, there ' s so many good players in the 65-69 year-old category. To qualify and then win four matches, it ' s a grind, going
36 and 36. We aren ' t as young as we used to be, but I found my second wind in both matches and was able to get it done. Very pleased."— Pulk The number: 1 – No. 1 seed to win his respective bracket( Engel). The other stroke-play medalists failed to reach the final match.
