GOLFERS OF THE YEAR

STEVE SERRAO

VSGA SENIOR MEN ’ S GOLFER OF THE YEAR
Home Club : Willow Oaks CC
What was your personal highlight of the year ? Partnering with my brother Jay in the Captain ’ s Putter matches at Bayville . Jay and I had a win and a tie together on Friday , then the team made a big comeback in singles to win the matches on Saturday .
Golf goals for 2025 : Making the Captain ’ s Putter Team and winning the matches is always a big goal . This year my most specific goal is to improve my WAGR ranking enough to earn an exemption into the U . S . Senior Amateur . The goals are basically the same every year these days . I would like to win at least one VSGA title and qualify for at least one USGA Championship .
What is a fun fact no one knows about you ? I didn ’ t start focusing on golf until I was cut from the JV basketball team by Coach Daniels on Nov . 27 , 1982 . I ’ m totally over it and not bitter about it at all .
What golf ball do you play and how do you mark it ? Titleist ProV1 and mark it with a big blue dash . The mark is hard to miss .
How do you manage your life / golf time balance ? When I was a mid-amateur , most of my free time was taken up with parenting and coaching my kids ’ teams . Because of that , over the years I ’ ve learned to maximize the time that I do have to practice by being really disciplined and always trying to work on basics . I usually only play on Saturdays with my friends at Willow Oaks . I try to stay fit and pain-free by rotating among three different workouts and usually get those done before I go to work .
Must play course you haven ’ t played and / or a “ dream ” destination golf trip ? The Old Course at St Andrews . Next August I ’ m heading to Scotland with a bunch of friends from Willow Oaks . St Andrews is on our schedule .
