The Greenbrier ( White Sulphur Springs ) Called “ America ’ s Resort ,” this National Historic Landmark nestled against the
Allegheny Mountains oozes charm and sophistication and has made a legacy of hospitality its calling card since opening in 1778 . During his lifetime , World Golf Hall of Famer Sam Snead was a regular fixture around the facility with his dog riding along in the golf cart .
Designed by Scotsman Charles Blair Macdonald and opened in 1914 , the Greenbrier ’ s first 18-hole course — the Old White Course — hosted the PGA TOUR ’ s Greenbrier Classic from 2010-2019 . The par-71 course offers four sets of tees and plays to 6,655 yards , and while it is not a long layout , it ’ s challenging enough to have hosted the 1979 Ryder Cup and the LPGA ’ s 1994 Solheim Cup . Jack Nicklaus renovated The Greenbrier in 1977 .
The Meadows was designed by Alexander Findlay and opened for play as a 9-hole course called Lakeside in 1911 . Seth Raynor redesigned the course in 1923 and it was
expanded to 18 holes by golf architect Dick Wilson in 1962 . The course was again redesigned by Bob Cupp in 1999 , when it was officially renamed The Meadows — and then it underwent a final transformation in 2017 after flooding in 2016 destroyed several holes . Now known for its signature stacked-sod bunkering , the par-70 , 6,536- yard course offers four sets of tees .
The Greenbrier also offers its Ashford Short Course to provide a quality golf experience for the entire family . The Ashford is a nine-hole walking course of par-3s , ranging from 76 yards to 112 yards .
