MIKE WISE AWARD ADDED TO VSGA-VIP SCHOLARSHIP OFFERINGS In partnership with the VSGA and First Tee – Roanoke Valley , the VSGA-VIP Scholarship Foundation has added the Mike Wise Award to its stable of scholarship offerings . It ’ s the sixth named Foundation award and will be allocated for the first time at VSGA Day on May 22 at Richmond

Country Club .

Wise , who died in December 2022 at age 72 , spent 20 years as the Chief Financial Officer at Delta Dental of Virginia and was a longtime member of the VSGA

Board of Directors . He also had a significant philanthropic impact on golf in the Roanoke Valley . He founded the Delta Dental Pro-Am for Kids and served on the boards of numerous non-profit organizations , including First Tee – Roanoke Valley .

“ We will always be grateful for Mike ’ s guidance and dedication to golf , children and improving our community ,” First Tee – Roanoke Valley executive director Jennifer Blackwood said .

The Mike Wise Award joins a list of named awards honoring contributors to golf in Virginia , including the Spencer-Wilkinson Awards , the C . Dan Keffer Award , the David A . King Award , the Red Speigle Award and the Richard Smith Award .

“ We hope the establishment of this named award will bring special meaning and encouragement to students in the Roanoke Valley with an interest in golf to pursue their academic dreams ,” VSGA-VIP Scholarship Foundation president Joan Gardner said .

IN MEMORIAM : PAUL MICHAELIAN , PGA Paul Michaelian , PGA , a member of the inaugural Virginia Golf Hall of Fame selection committee , died on February 14 at age 60 . Michaelian served as head PGA professional at all three courses at The

Country Club of Virginia before moving on in 2000 to become head PGA professional at Meadowbrook Country Club in Richmond . Three years later , he became the head PGA professional at Princess Anne Country Club in Virginia Beach , where he served for 13 years .

Michaelian held important roles within the Middle Atlantic PGA as well , serving as MAPGA president in 2003-04 . He was honored with the MAPGA ’ s Professional of the Year Award in 2003 . He served the PGA of America as a delegate for many annual meetings and on the PGA Board of Control from 2011-15 .

Michaelian is survived by his wife Michele , three children and two grandchildren .

TREMBLAY EARNS NATIONAL PGA HONOR In January , the PGA of America honored Josh Tremblay , PGA , with the PGA Player Development Award . Tremblay , a nearly 20-year PGA member , is director of golf at Springfield Golf & Country Club and has led the club ’ s golf program since 2009 . This honor bestows special recognition to a PGA member who has displayed extraordinary and exemplary contributions and achievements in the area of player development .

MAPGA HALL OF FAME INDUCTS 2023 CLASS Longtime Westwood Country Club professional Glenn Brown and recently retired Columbia ( Md .) CC professional Bob Dolan were inducted into the MAPGA Hall of Fame during the chapter ’ s Super Meeting

at Lansdowne Resort in February . The MAPGA Hall of Fame now has 58 members .

Brown , 73 , retired in 2018 after 36 years as the head professional and 40 years overall at Westwood . Brown served in section governance for many years and was responsible for the creation of a section compensation survey , which was later adopted by PGA of America headquarters . Dolan spent 27 years at Columbia and served as MAPGA president from 2002-03 . He earned the PGA ’ s National Youth Player Development Award in 2000 and the national Bill Strausbaugh Award in 2011 .

TWO LIV GOLF EVENTS SCHEDULED FOR AREA Trump National Golf Club , Washington , D . C ., in Sterling will host a LIV Golf stop May 26-28 . It will be one of three LIV events hosted at Trump properties in 2023 . Trump National Bedminster in New Jersey hosts one from Aug . 11-13 and Trump National Doral in Miami will host another Oct . 20-22 .

Trump National hosted the Senior PGA Championship in 2017 . Past major champions playing LIV Golf include Cam Smith , Dustin Johnson , Bryson DeChambeau , Sergio Garcia , Phil Mickelson and Brooks Koepka , among others . LIV Golf events feature 54 holes of stroke-play competition along with a team element that coincides with regular play .

LIV Golf will visit another area spot Aug . 3-5 when it heads to The Old White TPC at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs , W . Va . The Old White last hosted a PGA Tour event — the Greenbrier Classic — in 2019 .
