LED BY RENOWNED COURSE ARCHITECT TOM DOAK , Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina broke ground in January on Pinehurst No . 10 , the first new course at the resort in nearly three decades . Located four miles south of the main resort clubhouse , Doak ’ s 18-hole routing is expected to open in late spring 2024 , coinciding with the return of the U . S . Open to Pinehurst No . 2 .

The new course will incorporate rugged dunes mined at the turn of the 20th century accented by native sand and wiregrass . With natural ridgelines , intriguing landforms , towering longleaf pines , streams

and ponds , Doak envisions a course that complements the resort ’ s other courses through its contrasts .

“ The site is topographically distinct and drastically different from anywhere in Pinehurst ,” Doak said in a press release . “ It ’ s bigger , bolder and more dramatic . There ’ s about 75 feet of elevation changes , and we ’ ll work our way up to it around the mid-point of the layout . You ’ ll have expansive views from this apex over the rest of the course . It will be an unforgettable experience for golfers .”

Doak made his first visit to Pinehurst more than 40 years ago . At that time , he

toured and played the famed No . 2 track , rating the storied Donald Ross design a perfect “ 10 ” in his book , “ The Confidential Guide to Golf Courses .” Doak was a vocal supporter of No . 2 ’ s restoration by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw in 2010 prior to the U . S . Open being played at No . 2 in 2014 .

“ We ’ ve worked with some amazing golf architects who ’ ve embraced our natural aesthetic and believe Tom will do something fantastic on this site ,” Pinehurst Resort president Tom Pashley said in a press release .

Doak ’ s lead design associate will be landscape architect Angela Moser , a 12-year veteran of Doak ’ s design firm who has worked on Doak projects such as St . Patrick ’ s in Ireland and Te Arai Links in New Zealand .

Of the property , Moser told Golf . com : “ My favorite part is the long-range views that make you feel the place , the property and the terrain , and you think you are on top of the trees and the world .”

According to Golf . com , Doak said the plan is for the course to be completely roughshaped by May with detail work continuing through the summer and the course being planted by September . He noted the accelerated timeline was made possible by a brief lull in his associates ’ schedule and the experience the Pinehurst staff has with course construction and accessing local resources .
