Cedar Point Club in Suffolk will play host to the 2022 VSGA Amateur Championship beginning the last week of June . A long-time , passionate supporter of the VSGA and the venue for three previous VSGA Amateurs , Cedar Point has been the setting for two of the most momentous amateur championships in history .

In 1975 , Curtis Strange captured his second consecutive Amateur — winning the title at Cedar Point in the most dominating performance in the history of the event at match play — beating his opponents by an average score of 6 & 5 , while shooting 21 under par and playing 70 holes before recording his first bogey . In 2009 at Cedar Point , Brinson Paolini , who later became an All-American at Duke University and winner of the prestigious Byron Nelson Award for excellence in the classroom and on the golf course , won the second of his three straight Amateur titles . Brinson is the only person to ever win the Amateur three consecutive years , rallying from five down with nine holes to play in the dramatic final match to defeat Lanto Griffin , who has gone on to great success on the PGA Tour .
The stunning 11th hole at Cedar Point is a visually intimidating par-4 that demands superb accuracy both off the tee and on the challenging approach shot . At only 368 yards from the tips , many players will hit less than driver from the tee , especially as the fairway grows tighter and more trouble comes into play the farther you strike your tee shot . Most golfers will hit a fairway wood , hybrid , or a long iron to lay-up to the area just left of the fairway bunker to set up a short-iron approach to the deep , narrow green .
The second shot — daunting even when played from the fairway and especially with any degree of wind — becomes downright harrowing if played from the rough or the fairway bunker . The slender putting surface provides only a small target and a watery grave ( and a score very likely worse than bogey ) awaits on the right . While many players will bail out to the left , recoveries from that side of the green are often dicey as the slick putting surface slopes away from the golfer and the water lurks just beyond the green . The 11th at Cedar Point , while not long and certainly a possible birdie opportunity , is a truly outstanding golf hole and one on which contestants in the

Apart from serving as the venue for this year ’ s Amateur , Cedar Point has hosted numerous past VSGA events and in 2023 , the club will hold the VSGA Women ’ s Amateur Championship . In serving as the venue for the Women ’ s Amateur , Cedar Point Club will become just the second course in the commonwealth to host every major VSGA championship , joining Farmington Country Club . The VSGA extends its heartiest congratulations and profound thanks to Cedar Point Club on this remarkable milestone .
