Around The Commonwealth
VG : What led you to orthopedics ? PK : I was very handy growing up and had done a program with an orthopedic surgeon . I used to fix bikes , I had taken my parents ’ lawnmower apart when I was a kid and put it back together . I was very , very handy , and still am . It just seemed like a natural fit for me to be an orthopedic surgeon .
VG : You help support the medical needs of the
Richmond Spiders and Richmond Kickers ?
PK : At the University of Richmond , E . L .
Clements was the team doctor for years and Chris Young helped him . When E . L . retired , Chris took over and I helped in different capacities over the last 20 years . And in the last five years or so , I ’ ve been taking care of all of the sports with Chris and then when he retired , I took over as the head team physician . It ’ s been a year now .
I also started taking care of the Kickers when I came to Richmond and then took a little hiatus . A few years ago , I got back involved with the organization . I don ’ t cover a whole lot of games because of my
commitment to UR but I take care of the athletes that have had or need surgery . They ’ re all a delight to take care of as are the Richmond athletes .
VG : Greatest golf moment ? PK : I ’ m not sure if it ’ s shooting 64 , playing Cypress ( Point ) or playing The Olde Course . It ’ s hard . Probably shooting 64 — I was pretty excited about that . My favorite course is Cypress for sure . It ’ s an unbelievable place .
VG : Do you treat a lot of golf injuries ? PK : I definitely see people who have pain from playing golf . I would say the majority of them are rotator cuff and shoulder
LET ’ S RECONNECT type problems . I tend to see more middle-aged , weekend warriors — somebody who chunked one out of the rough and feels a pain in their shoulder .
VG : Any advice for potential scholarship
applicants / recipients ?
PK : When you start looking at kids that
are scholarship candidates , they ’ re the same type of kid that would be looking at elite academic institutions at the collegiate level . Those are kids who have not only a tremendous academic record but a strong volunteering record . They typically play athletics and they ’ re an incredibly well-rounded bunch . I think those are the kind of kids you ’ re looking for .
If you or a family member is a former award winner , especially from the early years , we ’ d love to hear from you and possibly do a “ quick nine ” in Virginia Golfer or on VSGA . org . Many early award recipients have moved away or lost touch , and we ’ d love some help in our ongoing quest to fill in a few blanks and figure out “ Where Are They Now ?”
