Mount Vernon won its 16th VSGA Women’ s State Team Matches title in 2025.
OUR HISTORY
MVCC may be best known for the dominance of its women players in Virginia State Golf Association competition, having won 16 VSGA Women’ s State Team championships since 1991. But it was the service of women who recognized the dire disrepair of Washington’ s estate and tomb and organized a capital campaign to save it nearly 170 years ago.
Mount Vernon is owned and maintained today by the private, non-profit Mount Ver- non Ladies Association. And because of their successful efforts to rescue the historic site, George Washington’ s estate now hosts one million visitors each year, sharing significant American history with all ages.
It won’ t be easy to decide which historically significant items should be included from each U. S. state and territory when a time capsule is buried at Independence Mall in Philadelphia on July 4th. Condon has worked with 56 state and territory commissions to gather their respective time-capsule contributions.
She will start the national celebration in New York City on the evening of July 3rd, when the Times Square ball drops for the first time not for the New Year. In fact, there will be eight different ball drops for each of the different time zones representing every U. S. state and territory.
The Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association has been preserving and promoting George Washington’ s Mount Vernon for more than 160 years.
Following the ball drops, Condon will head down to Philadelphia to oversee the time-capsule ceremony, followed by fireworks and a FIFA World Cup game. The rest of her America250 team will head to Los Angeles for“ America’ s Block Party” in the LA Coliseum to spearhead a day of giving.
And while the festivities for this year’ s 250th birthday of America will be plentiful, expansive, and diverse, Bradburn hopes the historical significance of
America250 won’ t get lost in the sizzle and boom of celebration.
“ The 250th anniversary is a really big deal because this started as an experiment in self-governance and it was launched by George Washington as our first Commander-in-Chief,” said Bradburn.
“ You do want to take time
to celebrate, but this is also a chance for us to really think hard about how we can make sure this unique and incredible place can be handed over to our descendants to celebrate going forward,” added Bradburn, admitting he sometimes wonders how much time Washington spent in what is now his backyard.
Just as many other MVCC members have learned this year, Bradburn sees the direct line from Washington’ s dream to this year’ s milestone, saying,“ I hope Americans will get a little inspired, learn about their history, and realize they are connected to something much bigger than themselves.”
