A HISTORIC

PARTNERSHIP

Mount Vernon’ s 18 holes feature commemorative America250 flagsticks.

By proximity and synergy, the country club and the Mount Vernon estate will collaborate this year on a series of activities for America250, ranging from lectures and tours to culinary events. The club’ s whiskey tasting will include some of Washington’ s spirits. And there will be a rare book tour for members at the George Washington Presidential Library at the Mount Vernon estate, typically open only by appointment.

As a special touch, the usual silhouette of Washington’ s profile as MVCC’ s club logo has been co-branded with the America250 logo on the course’ s flagsticks. The 129-acre course meanders through the original Mount Vernon estate with Dogue Creek, a Potomac tributary, trickling into play on 14 of 18 holes.
Of course, there will be golf at MVCC on July 4th, kicked off by a members’ golf-cart parade. Committee event planners are hoping the Washington Nationals’“ Racing Presidents,” oversized costume mascots of U. S. Presidents, also will make a guest appearance for the celebration.
Then at 2:50 p. m. on July 4th, Condon and her national America250 team will orchestrate an“ America Waves” event, encouraging residents of every U. S. state and territory to wave small American flags acknowledging America’ s 250th birthday.
“ We did a big America Waves event at The Players Championship, and you could see everyone, from all walks of life, waving their flags and really representing what America looks like,” she recounted.
“ That’ s what this is all about, just finding those moments of unity and creating memories for families,” added Condon, whose America250 travel schedule is taking her coast to coast all year.

SERVICE AS

CELEBRATION

America250 is a non-partisan initiative established by Congress and, according to Condon, its mission is to engage 350 million Americans— ideally, even offering a common ground.

One of the efforts will be to focus on service through the America Gives program, encouraging groups and individuals to volunteer time during this year’ s celebration. In that spirit, MVCC is participating in the PGA of America’ s Helping Our Patriots Everywhere( HOPE) program. Military veterans in northern Virginia of all ability levels come to MVCC to learn how to play golf with the club’ s teaching professionals.
“ We’ re running adaptive golf programs designed around the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of veterans,” said Smith.
“ I think there’ s a real strong sense of community service and patriotism in our club,” added Bradburn.“ Many of our members work in government and trade associations and there are a lot of veterans in this area.”
And while Condon acknowledged that“ some Americans are not ready to fly a flag or go to a parade,” she hopes that the chance to volunteer at home will be the way many Americans choose to celebrate this year. The initiative’ s goal is to record the largest year of service in national history.
“ This is an opportunity to come together as a country and we hope that many Americans will say they commemorated our Semiquincentennial by giving back in their communities,” Condon added.
