Mount Vernon Country Club

By Lauren Greenlief

Mount Vernon is the only country club built on land that was part of George Washington’ s original five farms. This year, Mount Vernon Country Club( MVCC) is hosting a set of special events in partnership with America250 to celebrate its distinctive place in our nation’ s founding. One of these events was a partnership with the VSGA to host the 10th VSGA Women’ s Four-Ball and Senior Four-Ball Championships in May.

The championship golf course originally opened in 1961 and was designed and enhanced by architects Russell Roberts, Ed Ault, and, most recently, Bill Love. One prominent feature is Dogue Creek, a tidal tributary of the Potomac River, which winds through the entire property and comes into play on 14 of the 18 holes. One of these holes is the challenging par 3 16th.
SWEEPING VANTAGE POINT
The tee box of the 16th hole provides a sweeping vantage point of the golf course and clubhouse. From this spot on the course, golfers have a view of holes 1, 9, 12, 13, 15, 17, and 18. Those on the 18th green, 1 tee, and at the clubhouse also have a good view of the action unfolding as matches reach the 16th green.
The closing par 3 on the course can be played from five sets of tees ranging from 83 to 182 yards, all of which require a carry over water. The green is protected by water short and three bunkers that wrap around the back and to the right. Players have a nice view of the 17th tee box and the test that lies ahead as they make their way to the green.
NOTABLE GOLF HISTORY FOR MOUNT VERNON COUNTRY CLUB
Not only is MVCC notable for its historical location, but for its history in Virginia Golf as well. The club has played host to 10 VSGA Championships, including the most recent Women’ s Four-Ball Championships this May. MVCC has won the VSGA Women’ s State Team Matches a record-tying 16 times( with CCV), including the last two titles in 2024 and 2025.
