CHRIS LANG( 2) couple of opportunities coming in. I didn ' t make one. David didn ' t make one. But take nothing away from the week. We had an awesome week together. It ' s hard to win a golf tournament. Steve and Jay played great, and they won. I don ' t think we lost. They won.”— Cam Young The number: 2 – Steve Serrao has won this championship with 2 different partners. He won in 2018 with Young, who was runner-up with David Jordan.
13th VSGA Super Senior Four-Ball Championship Winners: Mike Ligon and Jack Catlett, 65 +( 67-33— 100, won in playoff); Jim Woodson and Jack Allara, 70 +( 68-35— 103); John Osborne and Bill Engel, 75 +( 67-34— 101) Site: Blacksburg Country Club The story: Overhead in the Blacksburg clubhouse:“ We got more rain in the last 48 hours than we got in the last 48 days.” Competitors battled multiple delays for heavy spring mountain storms, and the competition was shortened to 27 holes due to more heavy rain forecasted in the afternoon on the second day. About 2½ hours after the 70 + and 75 + divisions were decided, Ligon rolled in a 10-foot birdie putt on No. 9— the sixth playoff hole— to claim the title in the 65 + division. Fun story from the 75 +: Osborne and Engel were childhood friends who went to Virginia Tech and worked on the construction crew when BCC was being built. Allara and Woodson’ s 70 + title was their second of the year at BCC. They previously won the Alleghany Amateur super senior division there in April. Career VSGA titles: Ligon( 1), Catlett( 1), Woodson( 4), Allara( 7), Osborne( 1), Engel( 4).

But West Virginia put up a spirited rally, winning five singles matches in a row at one point to tighten the proceedings. Virginia’ s regulars pulled through at the end, with captain Justin Young claiming the clinching point with his 2-up win over Noah Mullens. Series record: Virginia leads 35-4-2 Quotable:“ Respect and love to all of those guys. We team up with them when we play North and South Carolina( in the Captain ' s Putter Matches), so we have a good relationship. It ' s always good when they ' re playing well and we ' re playing well, and it comes down to the wire like this. I wasn ' t looking at the leaderboard all day. I finished my match, and guys were like,‘ Great putt, way to finish it up, we really needed that point.’ Then I looked at the leaderboard and saw a wall of blue( WV’ s color on the leaderboard) and was like,‘ Oh man, we really did need that point.’ Great to watch and support the other guys after I was done.”— Virginia’ s Joey Jordan The number: 15 – Virginia is unbeaten in the last 15 playings of the event, with 14 wins and a tie in 2018.
