Around The Commonwealth
The Women’s Amateur had already
undergone a significant change in the
offseason. Stroke-play qualifying has
been reduced to one day, and the top 16
players after that qualifying round will
advance to the championship flight. The
remaining players will be seeded and
placed in consolation flights. The goal
was to ensure everyone who entered
the event would get to experience
match play.
Rory Weinfurther, who will begin her
college golf career at the University of
Richmond later this summer, returns
to defend the title she won last year at
Princess Anne Country Club. Weinfurther
defeated Mallory Hetzel 1 up in last
year’s final. Since 2010, four women have
won back-to-back Women’s Amateur
titles: Amanda Steinhagen (2010-11), Lauren
Coughlin (2012-13), Abby Portyrata
(2015-16) and Lauren Greenlief (2017-18).
Weinfurther figures to face tough
competition from several youngsters,
including Melanie Walker, Danielle Suh
and Julie Shin. Roanoke Country Club is
one of the four founding members of the
VSGA and will be hosting the Women’s
Amateur for the first time since 1948.
The Women’s Am is visiting the area for
Rory Weinfurther
the first time since Lyberty Anderson’s
championship win over Lauren Coughlin
in 2014 at Hidden Valley Country Club
in Salem.
