They came up with words such as pro- fessional (five of the six), service, caring, encouraging, supportive, loyal, dedicated, hard-working, fair and gentleman. You will find nary a bad word among them. Smiley says why after choosing “respected.” “I have never heard anyone say any- thing negative about Tom Barry. That is amazing considering how many individ- uals he had interactions with during his time at Jefferson Lakeside,” Smiley said. “He is respected not only for his tenure and knowledge of his profession, but for V I R G I N I A G O L F E R | J U LY / A U G U ST 2 0 1 9 the way that he treats every single person with kindness and respect.” Barry came to Jefferson Lakeside CC in 1983 from Oregon Golf Club in Oregon, Ill. He has become what Shanley and Guhl term, “the consummate PGA professional.” Retired MAPGA executive director Dick Johns called Barry “a prince of a human being. He’s the best. He looked out for his members 100 percent of the time. And he looked out for his fellow PGA professionals.” Guhl says the best thing about know- ing Barry is: “Too many to limit to one thing. He is a great Rules mentor to me, a walking lesson in how to treat others vsga.org F or those of you who know or know of Tom Barry, longtime head PGA Professional at Jef- ferson Lakeside Country Club in Richmond, put on your thinking cap and come up with three words you would use to describe Barry. Then, choose one of those descriptions and explain why you picked it. Barry, 66, has retired after spending 36 years as Lakeside’s gentleman pro because of health reasons.
