A Prince of a Human Being
Retired Jefferson Lakeside CC professional Tom Barry
touched many during his 36 years at the club
14
PGA Executive Director Jon Guhl; VSGA
Executive Director Matt Smiley and Barry
himself took on the request.
They came up with words such as pro-
fessional (five of the six), service, caring,
encouraging, supportive, loyal, dedicated,
hard-working, fair and gentleman.
You will find nary a bad word among them.
Smiley says why after choosing “respected.”
“I have never heard anyone say any-
thing negative about Tom Barry. That is
amazing considering how many individ-
uals he had interactions with during his
time at Jefferson Lakeside,” Smiley said.
“He is respected not only for his tenure
and knowledge of his profession, but for

the way that he treats every single person
with kindness and respect.”
Barry came to Jefferson Lakeside CC
in 1983 from Oregon Golf Club in Oregon,
Ill. He has become what Shanley and Guhl
term, “the consummate PGA professional.”
Retired MAPGA executive director
Dick Johns called Barry “a prince of a
human being. He’s the best. He looked
out for his members 100 percent of the
time. And he looked out for his fellow
PGA professionals.”
Guhl says the best thing about know-
ing Barry is: “Too many to limit to one
thing. He is a great Rules mentor to me,
a walking lesson in how to treat others
