smiles, bowling and determination

Davies Lule, Events Coordinator

To most of his colleagues, Davies Lule is the funny guy – always with a joke or an anecdote that often leaves them in stitches. Even when situations demand a serious face, there’ s that lingering smile that makes him look as if he is just about to burst into laughter. It’ s just as well, because every work environment could use a guy like Davies.

Back in 1999, at only 19 years of age, Davies applied for a job at The Village Market. By then, the popular shopping complex had become East Africa’ s ultimate shopping and recreation destination. At this time, Davies was taking IT courses at a local college and when he wasn’ t in class or seeking employment he could be found at the Kenya Commercial Bank Rugby Sports Club.
It was almost a year before Davies got a call from The Village Market confirming his employment.
“ I was excited to finally have a job – and a fun job, for that matter,” Davies recalls.
Davies was first assigned to the Tinman pool hall as a pool attendant. The pool hall is located next to Superbowl – the bowling facility that wowed Davies.
“ In all honesty, I have never seen anything like that before,” Davies admits rather shyly.“ Well, only in‘ The Flintstones’,” he quips, of the popular cartoon programme, while trying to play down his fascination with the Superbowl.

Although he was assigned to the pool hall, the bowling facility proved too much of a distraction for Davies, and on his first day at work his boss couldn’ t help but let him try his hand at bowling – as part of orientation, at least. However, on that first day, if anything could go wrong then it did. Davies raised the bowling ball to make a strike and instead hit and damaged the monitor on the side of the alley.
“ I can joke about that now, but it was no laughing matter then,” Davies says.“ I thought I would be fired there and then.”
