Feature ACCOMPLISHMENT : Faye Simanjuntak Everyday this sophomore saves lives of many through “Rumah Faye”, her biggest accomplishment yet. By Audrey Wasito A s a young, privileged girl, Faye Simanjuntak feels the responsibility to help others. Her main motivation for everything she’s doing, is simple: the less fortunate youths. Faye feels blessed with the positive environment she’s been born with, and as a result, she wants to help them. This is why she decided to dedicate herself to protect children from being trafficked into prostitution by opening a non-governmental organization (NGO), Rumah Faye. At only fifteen years old, she’s the founder of an NGO that continues to save the lives of many- this is an accomplishment. Rumah Faye was born on October 17, 2013. Ever since then, it's been implementing three programs, which is called the 3P’s. This stands for Pencegahan (prevention), Pembebasan (rescue), and Pemulihan (rehabilitation). In Prevention, the organization raises awareness by educating children about sex and how to protect themselves against sexual predators. In Rescue, the organization works with other NGOs to find youths to help. Finally, in Rehabilitation, the young girls, are placed in a shelter, and they undergo a 100- day program to find job opportunities. With this in mind, it is no doubt that Faye is truly creating an impact by educating the youths and providing them with resources for a brighter future. In the big picture, Faye defines accomplishments by how her actions have helped others. Her definition of accomplishment doesn’t fit like a puzzle piece with how the world defines it, which is anything that has been achieved with success. Faye believes it also means something that she can look at with pride. Thus, Faye likes to think that her NGO, Rumah Faye, in of itself is an accomplishment; it’s an organization marked with tremendous success, but what it’s doing, saving lives, is something she holds with a great sense of achievement. One of Faye’s proudest moments was when Rumah Faye opened its shelter. Since this NGO is self-funded and self -governed, it was challenging to find the funds to build a shelter tailored to its program. However, after some time, they finally accomplished this goal through partnerships that financed the construction of the shelter. The shelter ensures that the girls have a safe place to grow and provides them with tools to find a job for the future. In addition, Faye is unsure of what lies ahead for her organization but she’s sure of one thing: she will continue to strive to be an agent of change. Not many people can say they’re the founder of a non-governmental organization, but for Faye, it’s a different story. Every single day, her NGO is helping an abundance of girls by providing them with a better tomorrow. Today, Faye’s priority is school; however she’s doing as much as she can to work in the organization during her spare time. Faye is dedicating herself to this cause from her desire to serve others and to create a posi- tive impact on the world. Everyone has different ways of defining accomplishment, but it is no doubt that what Faye is doing for this cause is a massive accomplishment. 10
