Welcome! “Johnny Smith: Belonging” From The Teacher’s by focus on the Sarah Leeending A “Worthy of Worth?” Desk by By Ms. Sypolt Josiah Watanabe -Pg. 17 Brave Start: We often of a story. We anxiously wait for the moment where the drama is at its peak: the battle won, the One ring is destroyed, then all is well. They live happily ever after, the world is at peace, the hobbits return to the Shire. But the beginning is just as important as the end. A brave start changes the entire course of a story. How would Lord of the Rings been different if Frodo refused to leave the Shire? If he hid from the terrible things going on in Middle Earth? However, he didn’t. He chose to make a brave start, a decision that made all the difference. What does all of this have to do with you? Well, the start of a new school year is a time of new beginnings. For some this is the start of their first year here. For others it is the start of their last year here. For others, it’s simply the start of yet another year of school. Regardless, it is a start, a beginning. What does your beginning look like so far? Have you answered the door, or are you still waiting for second breakfast? Be brave, take that first step. The story is yours. Make it the year you want it to be. -Pg. 16 VIEWPOINT Volume 5.1 October Letter From The EIC By Sarah Lee ear Readers, D Welcome to the 4th issue of our Viewpoint Magazine! Our theme is “Fear and Grief”. At first, the two words seemed deviating from our usual pattern; after all, they are not happy, inspiring, or encouraging words at first glance. However, we found that this fourth quarter ahead of us is filled with the grief of letting go and the fear of unfamiliarity, especially as the seniors prepare to leave and others to experience the loss. We also noted that fear and grief are two abstract things that are often avoided and overlooked, but have significant influence in our lives. Our hope is that as we, the Journalism team, dig deeper into these topics, you the readers will discover with us the beauty and inspiration that can be extracted from Fear and Grief. I would like to thank every one of the writers who devoted their time and thoughts to the writing of these articles, the editors and layout-makers who used their creativity for the making of this magazine, and the Co-EICs and teachers whose encouragement and leadership were essential to the whole process. I and the new Co-EICs would like to especially thank the seniors and the former leaders of this class. They have been faithfulby to us, and their hard work truly brought us to where we areAmanda now. Lastly,Angeles the whole Journalism team would like to thank the readers for your support, and hope that this edition would be enjoyable, insightful, and inspiring to you all. “Italy: Rising From the Rubble” by Gen Ha Park 1 Layout by GiHyun Ahn -Pg. 10 “A New Friend” -Pg. 6
