Opinion “Johnny Smith: Belonging” V by Sarah Lee “Worthy of Worth?” by Josiah Watanabe -Pg. 17 -Pg. 16 “Starting is half the task” says a Korean proverb that emphasizes starting on new tasks. It is true that the beginning plays an important role in getting things done and getting us to where we want to be. It could be a start of a new job or a start of a new habit. Without starting, there would not be any changes in the first place. Often, people fall into the trap of complacency by thinking that since we have started, their job is almost done. The thought of changing and becoming better gets us excited but some make the mistake of overlooking the journey ahead of them because their mind is captivated by the excitement of starting. In reality, starting is only the beginning of the long journey that is ahead. Some people nowadays start on new jobs thinking that they are interested enough to pursue through the given tasks but end in giving up or changing jobs. When problems arise we tend to give up. Starting is good but if we fail to persevere through the hardships that come along with the tasks and simply give up, the effort that had been put into the starting diminishes. For this reason, enduring hardship and going through every given task is more important than starting. In Matthew 13, Jesus tells us a parable about the seeds that a farmer sca ttered. He explains By Alex Heo how some people give up so easily; he said “The seed on the rocky soil represents those who hear the message and immediately receive it with joy. But since they don’t have deep roots, they don’t last long. They fall away as soon as they have problems or are persecuted for believing God’s word.” As he said, some peop le st art with good motivation but don’t last long, eventually bearing no5.1fruit. So, Volume October every time we start something in good terms, we should also focus on getting to the point where we pictured ourselves to be when we first started. We should learn to not give up in the middle of the process and must learn to persevere through the hardship that comes along. We should remember that we cannot get the things that we want without hard work. Enduring hardship may not be enjoyable, but it is something that God tells us to do. Colossians 3:23 says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” As Christians, when we are on the verge of giving up, we should remember that God wants us to work by hard for him. No matter what the challenge is, we should persevere through it.
