Heart of the City Marjolaine Mauduit
The city glittered like a thousand diamonds , an oasis of light in the darkness . The moon , hidden behind a torn veil of clouds , bathed the streets in soft light . The city was most alive at this time , its congested highways and steady buzz of chatter pulsing with one massive heartbeat . Inej closed her eyes yet she could still see the flashing lights through her eyelids . A wave of fatigue washed over her body and Inej wasn ’ t sure if she would be able to open her eyes again . She could barely feel the burn in her chest anymore from the past events , her mind giving way to a wandering train of thought . Memories strung together like unravelling stitches as her hands played with the ragged pebbles around her , testing how far she could press the tip to her finger until she drew blood . Inej choked on a sob as an inky darkness flooded her mind . The ache in her chest disappeared as she let the obscurity and shadows wrap themselves around her , folding her vulnerable body with it .
And when it came , she let it swallow her whole .
