The River Life
Jasper Nelson - Year 8
There are legends that are never ending . And there are tales to end all legends . But whether those truths are lies , they are never ending . All things end , swept out to sea to the shores of memory . One cannot write a never ending story ; all will pass , all living things do . Entropy predicts that if a monkey smashes a typewriter it will eventually write Shakespeare ; but if it continues its rendition of Macbeth , it will cease to be a Shakespearian play . For the story of life is controlled , a collection of different stories , a scroll the size of a library . No matter how much you print , you will run out of paper . Maybe that is life , maybe that is death , maybe , that is the nature of stories .
Life is a story that ends and all stories do eventually end or are so old that they are forgotten .
Life and death , stories and silence , these are one and the same . Like a river they flow , unruly and calm , they break and mould once more . On the banks of consciousness , the eddies of myth and legend swirl into oblivion once remembered , now forgotten . It continues lost and found . By titans , behemoths of a different age , who pan for gold , nuggets of a magical treasure . They are sheltered during their toils by a tree . A tree of knowledge and fortune which shelters all who grow it , and frown on those who seek to burn it . Those whom hunt and those whom are hunted , wild and domesticated , unruly and calm . These alone , it will shelter , across their journey to the sea .
However , life is like a river and knowledge is like gold and people can find lost knowledge by " panning for gold " and they can be sheltered by knowledge and fortune , as fortune favours the bold .
And like a river , struggles may come . A storm that rumbles and steams , flooding the tree and banks . Good may come of the gold uncovered , but a root may be lost to the sea . Knowledge may be gained but memory does not stand . For it alone is human , and humans make mistakes ...
Disasters may come , such as the burning of the library in Alexandria and destroy the roots of knowledge , which are swept out to sea , forgotten .
