HOPE Works ’ 50th Anniversary
It began in 1974 as Women Against Rape , with volunteers answering a hotline during the night . When government leaders imposed a curfew for women in response to sexual assault reports , the same group plastered the city with its “ Curfew for Men ” poster in response . In the 80s it protested a local fraternity accused of sexual violence .
Today called HOPE Works , the agency is celebrating 50 years of providing resources to those who have experienced sexual violence . The milestone anniversary announcement comes , appropriately enough , during April , the nationally recognized Sexual Violence Awareness Month . The agency ’ s hotline number remains the same as the initial phone , and now receives about 2,300 calls per year . Services have always been free , accessible and confidential , and the organization ’ s mission continues to be ending all forms of sexual violence .
Through direct services , events like the national “ Take Back the Night ’’ and raising awareness throughout Chittenden County , survivors — including unhoused people , students , people of color , and members of the LGBTQ + community — know they are cared for and have support available to them . hopeworksvt . org .
