Epsilon Spires Haunted Home of Halloween
Throughout the month , Epsilon Spires in Brattleboro , VT will present a film and music festival titled The Apocalypse Will Be Televised featuring horror films about the power of media paired with live music performances . Each event opens with a live band , followed by a film that eerily depicts how too much screen time can prove deadly . There will be special themed drinks , tricks , and treats galore !
The Apocalypse Will be Televised festival continues on October 26 with the Japanese horror movie that swept America , Ringu ( The Ring ). Before the film , enjoy a rare acoustic guitar set from local shredder Graham Brooks of the legendary metal bands Barishi , Witch , and Ordh . This special acoustic metal inspired performance will be followed by the highest grossing Japanese horror film in history : Ringu ( 1998 ). This film launched the J-horror boom in the west and inspired a slew of remakes and imitations , but none compare to director Hideo Nakata ’ s original masterpiece which melded traditional Japanese folklore with contemporary anxieties about the spread of technology . Do you dare watch it for yourself ?
This Halloween , October 31 , is the final installment film : Ghostwatch ( 1992 ) featuring a live performance by U . K . based Bordello Collective . This is a rare opportunity for an American audience to experience the English cult classic that nearly shut down the BBC ! Stephen Volk and Lesley Manning ’ s Ghostwatch , is an extraordinary , ground-breaking social experiment that was originally presented on the BBC as an on-air Halloween Television special in 1992 . It professed to be a live paranormal investigation of “ the most haunted house in Britain ” and was so disturbing that after its broadcast that network was flooded with 30,000 phone calls – the film was banned for ten years and the BBC never showed it again . Guiding the audience through this paranormal journey are the artists Vision 25-C and DYAD of Bordello Collective , a queer performance group based in Middlesbrough , England . Vision 25-C will present a newly composed sound piece inspired by Ghostwatch and its experimentation with form , genre and atmosphere , and artist DYAD will introduce the film . On Halloween night , wear a costume and win a prize ! Only at Epsilon Spires , the Haunted Home of Halloween in downtown Brattleboro , VT . For more , visit epsilonspires . org .
Mackenzie Spencer ’ s ‘ Soup in the Dark ’
Rooted in Salem is thrilled to announce the upcoming solo exhibition Soup in the Dark featuring the remarkable work of artist Mackenzie Spencer . This exhibition opens on October 25 with a reception from 5:30pm to 7:30pm , inviting the community to explore the unique and evocative creations of Spencer .
Mackenzie Spencer ’ s work delves into the relationship between personal experience and artistic expression , drawing inspiration from her college days when late-night cans of soup became a staple . “ Soup is a feel-good food , especially when you ’ re sick ,” Spencer reflects . “ I adopted this idea in general , as making art served as my soup as I learned how to cope with the human condition .”
In conjunction with the exhibition , Rooted and Salem will be collecting a variety of non-perishable food items and sending them for Hurricane Relief . This exhibition promises to inspire and provoke thought , highlighting the power of art to reflect our shared human experiences .
