statement in the Bennington Town Clerk ’ s office , where it rests today . Allen ’ s independent act of manumission speaks to his ethics and convictions . Although Allen was not formally educated or devoutly religious , he despised human bondage . Although Dinah Mattis and her daughter were free , it would be decades before slave owners were prosecuted and punished in Vermont , let alone in the rest of the country .
Public Service
Colonel Ebenezer Allen continued to serve as a member of the state militia , helping build and command forts in southern Vermont toward the end of the 1770s in towns such as New Haven ( Vergennes ), Pittsford , and Castleton . The picketed forts served as military installations and afforded protection from British-led raids .
Around 1780 , Ebenezer moved to the southern tip of “ Two Heroes ,” which is now known as Allen ’ s Point in South Hero , where he helped establish a settlement , operated a ferry to the Colchester mainland , grew crops , and planted the first apple orchards . He also was involved in selling cattle and timber to Canada at a time when the post-war economy was bleak and trade with Canada was necessary for survival , but illegal and frowned-upon . As one of the first settlers of the islands , Ebenezer operated a tavern that hosted Prince Edward Duke of Kent , his “ mistress ,” and his entourage . He also served as Justice of the Peace , Town Clerk , and represented South Hero in the state legislature once Vermont became a state in 1791 . Ethan Allen fans remember Ebenezer ’ s tavern as the site of one of the last nights of Ethan ’ s life . Ethan had visited to get a load of hay from Ebenezer during the “ uncommon year of starvation ” in 1789 . Ebenezer sent word out to nearby Green Mountain Boys , who showed up in force to celebrate the good old days . Ethan suffered a stroke as his hired hand drove the sleigh across the ice to his home in Burlington the following morning . Ethan never regained consciousness .
In 1800 , Ebenezer and his wife , Lydia , moved to Burlington , where he operated a tavern on the busy waterfront . He passed away in Burlington in 1806 and was celebrated with a Masonic funeral and buried in Elmwood Cemetery . His marker sits near the sidewalk on Elmwood Avenue . Ebenezer ’ s biography includes tales of sleighs crashing through Lake Champlain ice , encounters with royalty , and artifacts of this legendary hero ’ s life .
