Warren Skatepark
Warren
After years of gradual growth and development , Vermont ’ s biggest concrete D . I . Y . skatepark completed its most recent building phase just ahead of summer 2021 . According to Holden Barth , the Warren Skatepark went through several distinct phases before it reached its current state . Barth says that when he first started coming to the Mad River Valley over a decade ago , the park consisted of little more than a few obstacles . “ When I started skating at the park , it was just a couple of wooden ramps and a concrete mini ramp . Over the years , I ’ ve watched the park grow with new concrete features thanks to dedicated volunteers . More and more skateboarders are coming to use the park . That leads to them wanting to get involved with the build of the park , which is rad !”
Barth says that most of the recent growth and development has been spearheaded by Pierre Hall , a Mad River Valley native . “ Without Pierre , there would be no Warren Skatepark . He grew up locally , and he ’ s the person who originally approached the town of Warren about getting a space for a skatepark . He ’ s also had experience building other skateparks , including the Manchester Skatepark .” Barth says that through skating and working with Hall , he has been able to lend a hand in the park ’ s construction . He notes that the town of Warren has played a key role in enabling the development of the skatepark by lending financial assistance to support the Warren skate crew ’ s fundraising efforts .
“ This past fall , we still had some budget money for the park ,” Barth recalls . “ This allowed Pierre to rent a mini-excavator and use it to tear up 2,000 square feet of old asphalt in the ‘ flat bottom ’ areas of the park . We had already poured concrete on several transitions , quarter pipes , bank ramps , and rollers over the years , but the gritty asphalt in between those features was rough to skate over .” In the spring of 2021 , the Mad River Valley Recreation District provided $ 5,000 in grant money to help pay for the concrete to replace the asphalt , but all of the labor that was necessary to get the park ready for the concrete was provided by volunteers . “ We went full-force on social media this past spring posting updates about the park and putting out the call for volunteers ,” says Barth . “ The Warren Skatepark is built with all volunteer labor . No one gets paid to build the park , but there ’ s a sense of pride
