Springfield Hospital — Determination to Serve Our Community
Springfield , Vermont , nestled along the Vermont border in the Connecticut River Valley , is home to Springfield Hospital . The result of a “ community-wide determination to establish a community hospital ” and under the leadership of its first President , George Leland , Springfield Hospital admitted its first patient on March 4th , 1914 in a small two-story building referred to as a ‘ cottage hospital .’
Fulfilling the early vision of its founders , a larger hospital was built at 25 Ridgewood Road , opened on June 30 , 1922 , and is Springfield Hospital ’ s current home .
Overcoming Adversity
The Great Depression and World War II tested the mettle of the local community hospital . Yet , the will to survive brought the Hospital town funding , a mortgage , and fundraising support to ensure local access to health care services would continue .
