Hi ladies , welcome to VENTS ! How have you been ? Thank you ! We are wonderful .
Can you talk to us more about your forthcoming single " Somewhere To Go "? Sure . This is a song about getting that phone call that brings you to your knees , and being the strength for the person on the other end . It ’ s a song about letting people know you ’ re there for them , and that there ’ s always somewhere to go ... you .
The instrumentation is also highly layered on this one ; it opens with a spare piano and vocals , and picks up intensity with atmospheric guitar , big drums , strings ( violins and cello ) and more . There ’ s a musical catharsis happening here , meant to reflect the emotional one .
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song ? Since we write as a group , we each had something very meaningful that we were drawing on as inspiration for this song . Mandy ’ s grandmother had just passed , I had my drum coach ( and dear friend ) call and tell me he had cancer , Jenny was thinking about her mom and her daily struggles she battles cancer , and Larissa was thinking about her uncle .
As we traded stories , we realized that the one thing that linked them all together was “ the call .” We each remembered that shattering moment when we got the news -- and when , at the same time , we needed to be strong , and to just be there for the person on the other end . When you get a call like that , someone is reaching out for your support .. they need you to express that there is always hope , no matter what .
Sometimes we have to stand up for each other , even when our friends or family don ’ t have the strength to stand up for themselves . They need you to be that “ somewhere to go ” so that they can make it through to the other side -- that , in a nutshell , is what inspired this song .
Any plans to release a video for the single ? As a matter of fact , we just finished developing the script , and filming begins this month ( July ).
The single comes off your new self-titled album - why naming the album after the band ? Even though we ’ ve been playing together for years and releasing singles ( as well as an EP , “ Enough ”) along the way , this was our first full-length album release . Every song on it tells a story from each of our lives , so it just felt right to name the album after the band -- there ’ s so much of our individual histories wrapped up in it .
Would you call this your most personal album to date ? Absolutely ! I think all of us in the band feel very proud of the work we did on this album , as well as the stories we shared . Our biggest hope is that people walk away feeling great after listening to our music or seeing one of our live shows -- that ’ s what brings us the most joy .
How was the recording and writing process ? As far as song ideas go , the beauty of the process is that we all sit together in a room and bring our own unique perspectives to the table . So we get ideas from our conversations , and by being open about our lives . It ’ s a very collaborative approach , and not only because we love writing together as a band -- at times it ’ s extremely therapeutic ! But , we ’ re honest too : a phrase we often use when we ’ re tossing out ideas is , “ I think we can do better .” This phrase allows everyone to feel good about their ideas , and not be afraid to put something out there again .
As far as this particular project goes , we actually wrote the entire album in two weekends , and recorded it in 1 0 days here in Austin . So I guess you could say it was extremely productive ! Our producers were a little nervous about being stuck in a room with all of us girls for two weekends , but the process proved cat-fight free . : - )
What aspect of female empowerment did you get to explore on this record ? All of our songs are written to empower women ! But “ Dare Me ” and “ The Beast ” are probably the most explicit about it . Those two are written to encourage women to free that part of them that is holding them back , and to take on whatever scares them : “ Dare Me ” echoes much of our personal story , in that it ’ s never too late to follow your passion and do something that scares you . “ The Beast ” is about recognizing , and even embracing , that beautiful beast that lives inside that you ’ re trying very hard to hide . Be free !
Any plans to hit the road ? Next month ( August ), we will be premiering “ Somewhere to Go ” at the FMQB Triple A Radio Conference in Boulder , during the awards ceremony . We are excited !
What else is happening next in The Mrs ' world ? Fun upcoming shows ! On August 1 9 , we will be playing Bat Fest here in Austin on the iHeart Radio country music stage . We also feel honored to be playing for two amazing women ’ s conferences this fall : Women of AT & T RAVE Celebration , themed “ I ’ m Enough ,” and the Society of Women Engineers Annual Conference .
