18 Ntila Mehlape Football Bursary Student Athlete profiles What does the VC Sports Club mean to you and the other students on campus? The VC Sports Club means a lot to myself and many students on campus as it is a way to express ourselves outside the area of academ ics. Many of us have goals in sports for after varsity and the VC Sports Club aids us in maintaining fitness and having fun with our friends. Describe a few of your highlights of being a Vars ity College student. In 2015 we competed in the USSA league with the Varsity College Football Club. We played an away game against the University of Johannesburg who were the reigning champions of the Varsity Sports at the time. We played and lost 2-1 but it was one of the best games and efforts that the team showed. It was a professional setting and it was a really compe titive game. All of my highlights at VC are sports related. Jason van’t Slot Mountain Biking Club Captain Why do you think it’s important to keep active? It is important for students to keep active because it’s a great stress release, it really clears your mind – healthy body, healthy mind. I find that I always feel much better after a ride once all the endorphins have been released. It also improves your confidence – as you develop in your sport it affects your self esteem in everyday life too. Keeping active at Varsity is particularly important as you are at your prime physically – unfortunately most students jeopardise this by dropping sport completely after it being compulsory at school. Describe what it’s like to be a student athlete. Being a student athlete is great. I have made good friends through the sports clubs at VC. You get to know your team mates quite well and there is tons of banter with each other. At sports socials you meet so many other sports orientated and likeminded people – it is such a vibe. Competing for your Varsity is extremely fulfilling and gives you that extra motivation to dig deeper. Jessica Lardant Hockey What does the VC Sports Club mean to you? It’s a place to make friends and be social with people who love doing the same thing as you. A place to interact with people and learn more about different types of activities, as well as sharing knowledge and passion for your own sport. What made you choose hockey as your chosen sport? I love being a team player and I fell in love with the game at a very young age and decided to pursue it and just never stopped, and I will continue to play for as long as I can.
