VALVE DESIGN
2026 generated valuable discussion among steering committee members representing end users, EPC contractors, and valve manufacturers. Although their backgrounds and perspectives differed, a common message emerged: the challenges described are not unique to valves. They represent a broader project execution issue that affects the entire industry. Mr. Jason Rao of Dow Chemical Company highlighted that many project problems arise not from unproven technologies, but from proven technologies being applied under unfamiliar combinations of conditions. He noted that new project organisations, supply chains, contractors, operating philosophies, and managementof-change situations can all become sources of first-time risks. In his view, improving interface management and recognising uncertainty early are among the most effective ways to prevent future problems. Mr. Allen Wang of Shanghai Longwell Mechanical & Electrical Engineering emphasised the importance of involving technical specialists at the earliest project stages and maintaining continuous monitoring of First-Time Factors throughout project execution. He stressed that effective mitigation requires proactive collaboration between EPC contractors and manufacturers, including the sharing of historical experience, technical concerns, and potential risks before commitments are made.
