Hunt Valve to produce 3D printed valve assembly for U . S . Navy submarines
SMC introduces all-in-one electric actuators
Hunt Valve , a Fairbanks Morse Defense ( FMD ) company , has been awarded a contract by the Maritime Sustainment Technology and Innovation Consortium ( MSTIC ) to produce a 3D printed valve assembly for installation on U . S . Navy submarines . This 70-pound valve assembly will be the first 3D printed assembly installed on a U . S . submarine , providing the Navy with a product that meets or exceeds the quality produced through
traditional sand-casting in about two-thirds less time . The contract allows the 3D valve to be installed on any U . S . submarine class , and the expanded use of additive manufacturing is expected to speed up the production of components for the Navy fleet by up to 75 %. This process is an attractive option for increasing production efficiency and gaining greater control over the defense industrial base supply chain . Hunt Valve is collaborating with Lincoln Electric to develop the valve assemblies . Lincoln Electric produces the valve body through additive manufacturing , and Hunt Valve manufactures the remaining components using standard manufacturing methods before assembling all the parts to create the full valve assembly .
SMC has launched the EQ series of slide-type ( EQFS ) and rod-type ( EQY ) electric actuators , featuring a fully integrated controller for a simpler set-up . These actuators provide an easier-to-use , space-saving solution that saves energy while reducing CO2 emissions . They are designed to overcome automation project challenges such as labor-intensive wiring , downsizing control cabinet space , reducing power demand , and eliminating time-consuming programming and commissioning . The EQ series is ideal for various applications , including transfer ,
assembly , lifting , dispensing , pressing and clamping , where a higher degree of precision or control is required or where compressed air is not available . Customers can set up the actuator via a single screen in just three easy steps , specifying stopping positions and defining speed , acceleration and deceleration by entering numerical values or by cycle time . This makes the EQ series an easy-to-integrate solution , no more complex than controlling a two- or three-position solenoid valve .
Fervo Energy selects Turboden for geothermal project
Fervo Energy , a developer of enhanced geothermal systems ( EGS ), has chosen Mitsubishi subsidiary Turboden to engineer and procure the first phase of its Cape Station project in southwest Utah . The initial phase will involve the construction of a 90-MW power plant using three generators equipped with six of Turboden ’ s closed-loop turbines . The Cape Station project is expected to achieve first power by 2026 and is planned to reach a total capacity of approximately
400 MW using up to 29 wells , including 21 horizontal EGS wells that rely on hydraulic fracturing to boost flow rates of hot water . Turboden , an Italian-based developer of organic Rankine cycle ( ORC ) systems , has installed its technology in more than 400 projects worldwide since 2011 . The company ’ s ORC system uses a turbogenerator that converts thermal energy into mechanical and electrical energy , relying on vaporizing an organic fluid with a high molecular mass instead of water .
