Welcome to our August issue , which focuses on severe service valves . These highly engineered valves are designed to withstand extreme operating conditions and challenging environments . They ’ re engineered to perform reliably and efficiently in applications where standard valves may fail or experience reduced performance .
For example , one of the main applications of severe service valves is in the oil and gas industry , where they play a crucial role in controlling the flow of hydrocarbons , chemicals , and other aggressive substances in upstream , midstream , and downstream operations . Be sure to read the article ‘ Managing wear in severe services ’ on page 22 to find out more .
Fossil fuel power plants extensively utilise severe service valves in critical areas such as steam control , turbine bypass , and feedwater control , where they are exposed to high temperatures , high pressures , and erosive steam . Chemical and petrochemical industries rely on severe service valves to handle aggressive and corrosive chemicals , acids , and solvents . For example , these valves are utilised in processes involving acid production , caustic treatment , and high-pressure reactors .
Mining and mineral processing industries also benefit from severe service valves in slurry and tailings applications , where they need to endure abrasive materials , high pressures , and solid particle erosion . They enable efficient control of the flow of ores , slurries , and process fluids ; for example , read the case study on page 54 about the Lanjigararh Alumina refinery in India , which utilises slurry angle valves .
Other industries commonly employing severe service valves include pulp and paper manufacturing , pharmaceuticals , wastewater treatment , and steel production ( see ‘ Revolutionary oxygen impulse technology for steel production ’ on page 25 ). In each of these sectors , the valves play a critical role in maintaining operational efficiency , minimising downtime , and ensuring the safety of personnel and equipment .
This month , we are pleased to welcome Combet Valves to our cover . This Dutch company specialises in valves characterised by their compact and space-saving design , which allows them to be integrated into systems or devices with limited space availability .
We have a treat from Hans Baumann for control valve fans : a technical article discussing the advantages of high-pressure recovery control valves on page 41 . Widely applied and appreciated in gas turbine use , these control valves have yet to make any real inroads in other applications , despite the concept potentially being of real benefit in other industrial sectors .
Finally , I ’ d like to highlight a slightly unusual addition to our article selection from awardwinning author Dennis Sherwood this month . On page 28 , he helps companies to avoid becoming victims of disruptive innovation and has some useful tips … and an example of how unhappy cows triggered an innovative valve design !
Best wishes ,
