Control Valve Solutions for Extreme

From managing temperatures as low as-452 ° F and handling extreme chemical processes, cryogenic control valve designs are critical in ensuring reliability, preventing emissions, and increasing safety.

Emerson’ s Fisher IC2 Cryogenic Top- Entry Control Valve is the latest product in its valve portfolio. While it’ s spec’ d with a number of designs and materials to meet stringent certifications and manage the extremities of cryogenic conditions, it rounds out the line by providing a solution for cold box applications in air separators, hydrogen liquefication, and LNG production processes.
Technology and R & D constantly evolve in the demanding cryogenic valve market and more specifically, for cold box applications. Consisting of insulated enclosures, cold boxes are used in extreme chemical processes, which house several components including heat exchangers, distillation columns, piping, and valves, operating at temperatures that range from-175 ° F to as low as-452 ° F.
What’ s concerning for valve manufacturers and end users is the effects of critical components in these conditions. From extreme cold to high-pressure environments, with ambient temperatures in between, it’ s not only required to address strict requirements but ensure consistent reliability, ease of use, and high performance.
In LNG and hydrogen production, failures may include leakages, fugitive emissions, and thermal shock, to name a few. All pose hazards where reliability and material integrity are pertinent to safety and operation performance.
“ Our cryogenic valve portfolio has been on the market for a while and the IC2 has been in the works for a few years.” said Brendan Leslie, Product Manager for the Fisher IC2 Top-Entry Control Valve at Emerson.“ However, this control valve now falls right into these specific applications.”
With its ability to operate at temperatures as low as-452 degrees ° F, the IC2 is rated CL600 pressure class. As a result, it can manage high-pressure fluids and regulate flow rates under extreme conditions.

combine to minimize heat conduction. This reduces the energy required to maintain process fluid temperatures, while enhancing overall operational sustainability.
Minimizing Emissions and Ease of Maintenance
In efforts to combat leakages and fugitive emissions, the IC2 incorporates what Emerson calls its Fisher enhanced ENVIRO-SEAL live-loaded packing system. While compliant with the U. S. Clean Air Act, the packing system and bellows can limit leakage to a maximum of 100 parts per million by volume, which surpasses U. S. Environmental Protection Agency( EPA) standards.
