Value
( C) INTEGRATED APPROACH
In this approach values are imparted to children not as a separate entity. Instead, the curriculum is so analysed as to identify the plug point at which the values could be linked and fused with the study of the specific subject in a very natural manner as an integral part of the learning material. This warrants a thorough analysis of the curriculum and competent teachers capable of transacting the values which form part of the hidden curriculum.
PROGRAMMES FOR DEVELOPING VALUES
Community prayer should be organized with care, enthusiasm and passionate zeal. A universal prayer for world peace may also be recited.
Health and Cleanliness programme: Pupils may be acquainted with the principles of healthy and hygienic living. Children may be encouraged to clean their rooms, furniture and bathrooms themselves. The pupils may be encouraged to participate in campus cleaning and the school can take up cleaning of hospitals or other social institutions.
Socially Useful Productive Work: inculcation of values like dignity of labour, cooperation and mutual help is possible through this programme. It also helps the individual to make judicious use of the leisure time.
Special class-room situations: in the course of teaching subjects like social studies, languages and science, the teacher should emphasise ideas concerning values such as unity of religions, national integration, scientific temper and citizenship.
Cultural and Recreational Activities: Pupils may be encouraged to develop values of cooperation, love, artistic talents and skills through cultural and recreational activities like;( a) Organising school anniversary, sports day etc.( b) Organizing cultural festivals, art exhibitions, literary events etc.( c) Encouraging students to participate in cultural activities depicting ideas like the unity of our nation, richness of heritage, religious tolerance etc.( d) Organising inter as well as intra school competitions in different areas.
( ii) Citizenship Training
The pupils may be imparted effective training in citizenship and other civic virtues through regularly organizing school assembly, hoisting National Flag, singing National Anthem, organizing mock parliament and debates on local and national problems, arranging excursions to places of cultural, religious and historic importance, celebrating national festivals, Republic Day, Independence Day etc.
( iii) Social Service Programme
Social Service programmes like organization of literacy camps in rural areas and slum areas, rendering voluntary services during local festivals and natural calamities and organizing public awareness campaigns on different issues would promote values of social belongingness, social cohesion and social well being.
The above stated values and activities are not an end. These are generic and while planning for these, many a finer dimensions would have to be evolved.
