Community Garden
The Valley View community garden is something that Valley View Schools has come together to create for people needing fresh produce, whether this is for many who can’t afford it or just anybody who needs it in general. The community garden is free of charge to anybody who needs local, fresh produce. All that is required of you is to pick what you need yourself. The garden is open all the time to the public but the plants are typically only available from late April to the end of September as obviously it needs to be growing season to get the plants available. The produce typically planted is a lot of tomatoes, okra, squash, many types of peppers and cucumbers. There are usually eight to ten types of produce planted and six to seven different types of peppers. Most of the plants and produce in the garden are planted directly into the soil, but some of the plants are transplanted from the agriculture department greenhouse. The greenhouse can be found over at the Junior High building as they mainly start the growth of the tomatoes before they are transplanted into the garden. Transplanting is to move or transfer something to another place typically with some effort or upheaval. The garden is taken care of by many of the Valley View faculty and also many students during the school day who take Mr. Sander's or Mr. Morris's agriculture classes as one of their electives. This gives the students a sense of how to plant many types of different fruits and vegetables, and also how to take care of and maintain a garden. Overall the community garden is a huge success. Many people come each year and every year to get all the different types of process they need. The garden usually makes around 4,000 pounds of vegetables each year. The garden help the new people to the community and people who are suffering from food shortages. It also spreads positivity around the school and the community. If you are ever in need of produce, be sure to come out to the Valley View community garden. By Antwon Bornds, Blake Arnoult, Levi Johns, and Caden Rice
