Denton seeks greater purpose in life , family , career

Sharah ’ Denton is a well-known person in the community from her work in public relations to her work as an organization leader . Earlier this year , Denton accepted the role as public information officer for the City of Valdosta . An opportunity she has been waiting for throughout her career in public relations .
“ I was in shock for days when I got the call ! I love my job and I am so blessed and humbled to be the first African-American to hold the position ,” she said .
Though her new role calls for long hours in the community , she is no stranger to making connections , networking , working long hours and marketing .
In 2010 , Denton along with four ladies in the community began to bring a new organization to the Valdosta-Lowndes County area , National Council of Negro Women .
She became the founding president of the NCNW Valdosta-Lowndes County section and has served as the first NCNW state president and is now serving as vice-chair for NCNW collegiate sections .
“ I did not expect to lead the organization in the beginning , and now 11 years later , I did not expect it to have grown as much as it has . So many opportunities have come from NCNW for myself and others that completely surpassed my vision ,” she said .
As mother of two , Denton was inspired to become active in the community to set an example for her children , Jalen and Laila .
“ I wanted to be a good example for my children , especially for my daughter . Because of my commitment to service , they are more inclined to participate in service projects at school and in the community .”
As a California native , growing up with a single mother , a host of aunts and three sisters , Denton was used to city life and surrounding herself with strong women .
“ The opportunities in this community made me like Valdosta and there was a lot of sacrifice and challenges but my main goal was to ensure my children had stability and positive environment ,” she said .
While Denton has accomplished so much through the years she has been in Valdosta , her journey has faced many challenges .
