Dancers , from first graders to high school seniors , dedicate five days a week to prepare for the production . Shenton keeps the production in mind yearround , seeing each student ’ s strengths months in advance . By mid-August , roles are assigned based on each dancer ’ s strengths , and the choreography is designed to highlight their abilities .
The attention to detail goes beyond the dancing . Some costumes date back to the 1980s and are maintained through sponsorships and community support . “ Each year , we fundraise through the community ,” Shenton says . “ This year , we raised enough money to re-costume the Russian dancers ’ costumes . Those costumes were from the late seventies .”
More than just a ballet , The Nutcracker has become a cherished Valdosta tradition , bringing families together . Many of today ’ s dancers are the daughters and granddaughters of former cast members , creating a special bond across generations . “ We really do this for the community ,” Shenton adds . “ I think it is the beginning of the holiday season for a lot of people . It just puts everybody in the Christmas spirit .”
The Nutcracker has become a legacy , with generations of families participating and returning to watch .
