Hurricane Irma Update

Hurricane Irma was one of the largest, strongest and costliest storms on record to hit the state of Florida. From as far south as the Florida Keys to as far north as Jacksonville, no one escaped the force of the storm. With three resort destinations in the state, Florida resort operations teams methodically tracked and prepared for the storm for almost a week. When it finally arrived, teams were ready. All guests had been evacuated from Grand Seas in Daytona Beach and from New Smyrna Waves in New Smyrna Beach. Summer Bay Orlando’ s remaining guests were equipped with hurricane preparedness instructions and amenities there remained open through Sunday afternoon.
When the eye of the storm passed directly through Central Florida and the outer bands reached as far east as the Atlantic coast, all three resorts felt the wrath of Irma.

Hurricane Irma blew through Central Florida in the early hours of September 11 and passed directly over Summer Bay Orlando. High winds and torrential rains pounded the resort as a ride out team and guests braced for the worst. In the light of day, fallen debris and a few downed trees were quickly cleared.
The Recreation Pavilion provided continuous activities and entertainment for resort guests as winds and rains diminished through Monday and Tuesday. By Wednesday, resort operations teams were able to reopen all resort exterior and interior amenities.
