PHILISA ABAFAZI EMERGENCY SAFE HOUSE is directed and managed by One Billion Rising South Africa Coordinator Lucinda Evans. PAB is the only emergency safe house( an eight-bed facility) which caters specifically to transgender victims of GBVF and gender expansive survivors who are not funded by the government. It is the only gender-expansive-focused emergency safe house in the Western Cape, along with one long-term shelter called PRIDE, which has a waiting list for admission as it’ s always full to capacity. Before PAB opened the first emergency safe house, gender-expansive victims would be referred to homeless shelters for support, which do not cater to extensive injuries or recuperation, and the clients must vacate the shelter from 8am to 5pm. PAB gender expansive safe houses have 24-hour care, hospital transport, follow-ups and house mothers who take care of the clients including providing three meals a day. Their second safehouse caters to women and their children who are victims of violence and includes rescues from violent situations, including trafficking.
