Black Widows:
Female suicide bombers can lower suspicion especially in large groups of people (soft targets). They are a
relatively a new phenomenon to SIEDs. Plastic explosives (Semtex), TNT and triacetone triperoxide (TATP) are
combined with metal projectiles to increase lethality. CBRN agents could also be used. 32
VBIED & SVBIED:
Inexpensive and uncomplicated to create. The mass of the vehicle
dictates not only the amount of explosives that can be carried but
can produce more collateral and incendiary damage coupled with
the fuel onboard.
Ammonium Nitrate is becoming harder to procure due to increased
government oversight on its sale and export. Un exploded
ordinance (UXO), or large munitions are replacing it as the terrorist
2nd choice for explosive charges.
The SVIED is a human guided bomb.
Hoax IED:
Terrorists may use a decoy IED to observe CF strategies and tactics in order to circumvent them in future
missions. 33
Magnetic IED:
Attached to the sides of CF vehicles. Can be accomplished with a two man terrorist team on a motorcycle
and set off using a timer or RC device. 34
Complex IED Attack:
Combination of different types of IEDs deployed in one target area. Recent examples include land mines,
in conjunction with PIR scanners attached to EFPs. 35
