Light Head Management Light Head Positions Normal Position – light in the left hand on a handle that allows use of the left hand. Light canister is stowed on the right hip. Light cord is run under the long hose. Temporary Position – light momentarily held in right hand. No need to route under long hose as it is held in the right hand momentarily. Temporarily Clipped – light is on and clipped by the rear of the light head, so it points down and away from the teammates. Stow the light cord behind the long hose and under the waist band when practical. Remember, the light head should be passed under the long hose when temporarily stowed. In this position, even though it is clipped off, it can still be used to signal the team. Permanently Clipped – light switched off, clipped up so the light head does not dangle and the light cord stowed behind the long hose and under the waistband. Light head should be passed under the long hose so as not to entangle light cord with the long hose during long hose deployment. The light should be temporarily clipped during tasks like bottle management, gas switches, SMB deployments, scooter switches, ascents, etc.. The light can be returned to the normal position once the task or drill has been completed. This will ensure it can be used to communicate and so on. Primary Light Failure During a primary light failure, teammates should ensure that the diver with the failed light is comfortable and that the problem is properly managed. Upon the light failure, the affected diver should turn to face the teammates or the teammates should have noticed the primary light is missing and they should turn to aid the diver who has lost their light. The diver with the failed light should also try signal to the team through touch contact or through effective activation of a back-up light. 4 UTD Student and Diver Procedures Manual
