STUDY MUSIC AT USQ
The music major within USQ’s Bachelor of
Creative Arts aims to create versatile, creative,
contemporary musicians. The program emphasises
collaborative music practice and the building of
musical literacy – enabling a variety of career paths
in performing and teaching. Students acquire
and apply music theory skills within performance
activities, in order for the two things to constantly
inform each other.
Our lecturers bring a multiplicity of skills
encompassing classical, jazz and pop styles with
extensive real-world experience. We welcome
students wishing to undertake honours and post-
graduate study, with supervisors’ interests and
expertise spanning a broad range of subjects
including music practice, music education, music
history, vocal pedagogy, composition, songwriting,
music production, jazz and improvised music,
theory and aural skills.
Dr Melissa Forbes’ research interests include
contemporary commercial vocal pedagogy,
collaborative learning in higher music education,
and the role of music in health and wellbeing. As a
singer, Melissa is equally at home singing jazz, RnB
and soul, blues, and folk music. She has released
two albums.
