After our Bandfest performance,
the youth bands from the U.K.,
Australia, and New Zealand departed
to set up for their concert that evening
at Pasadena Tabernacle. Members
from the USA East joined the rest of
the camp for free time in Old Town
Pasadena and spent the afternoon
exploring the city with friends new
and old.
Later that evening the camp
reconvened together for the joint
concert between the international
youth bands. It was a very special
moment to be a Salvationist in
Pasadena that evening and the
tabernacle was filled many famous
names from around the Army world,
including Ivor Bosanko and General
John Larsson – not to mention the
players and leaders participating at
camp themselves! Because of the
nature of the evening, each band
had time to present only a few
pieces. Nevertheless, they rose to the
occasion and delivered a program that
gave the listener an idea of their personalities
and abilities.
The Australia TYB, under the leadership
of Ken Waterworth, opened the concert and
delivered a stellar performance of “Corpus
Christi” (Redhead) as their chief performance.
After a brief intermission the New Zealand
TYB took the stage under the baton of
Duncan Horton and delivered a number
of wonderful performances, including an
entertaining version of “This is My Story”,

performed on trumpet by Jonty
Zydenbos. Following this, the U.K.
TMS “A” Band took the stage under
the leadership of Dr. Stephen Cobb
and presented a captivating program
that concluded with a performance
of Andrew Wainwright’s “Variations on
‘Was Lebet’”, a piece recorded by the
ISB earlier this year. It was a wonderful
end to a Saturday night and all three
bands deserved the standing ovation
the crowd gave them at the end of the
evening.
The next morning, the Star Lake
Band travelled to the Santa Ana Corps
for their worship service. The band
was able to share a number of pieces
with the congregation this morning:
“Make His Praise Glorious” (Gordon),
“O Love” (Blyth), and “Everlasting
Hope” (Sharman). Special mention
must go to Devonte Thompson for
his euphonium solo “Compelled by
Love” (Catherwood) and Mackenzie
Dalrymple for his horn solo “Nothing
but thy Blood” (arr. Burgmayer).
Monday was a more relaxed day for the
camp. At 9:15am we had another individual
band rehearsal and it was here that one of my
personal highlights for the week occurred.
Our band was fortunate to be joined
by General John Larsson, who shared a
few words with the group and gave some
context behind the piece written by his son
Kevin that we would be performing at the
final concert.
