Urban Grandstand: Have you had a lot of help through the process at all? Is it something you’ve been doing on your own?
Rome Alexander: In terms of the actual music, I taught myself how to do it. I get a lot of help from different people. My dad was huge help to me, and I’ve recorded with a few people in Pittsburgh who have helped me out with recording. I also worked with a producer in New York once who was able to teach me a lot.
Urban Grandstand: Did you grow up with people in your family doing music at all?
Rome Alexander: My mom played piano, but mostly listening to a lot of music. They were big music lovers, so I grew up surrounded by music.
Urban Grandstand: What has the support been like there in Pittsburgh?
Rome Alexander: As far as I know, Pittsburgh has a good jazz scene. There are a few jazz artists that come from here. I’m going to school in St. Louis now, so I have not done too much musically in Pittsburgh
Urban Grandstand: How has being in St Louis helped?
Rome Alexander: The biggest thing for me so far hasn’t been location. I’ve been building a buzz online. I’ve found that through things like Twitter and Facebook, I’ve been able to talk to a lot of fans online all over the world. I don’t have a huge fan base or following just in Pittsburgh alone.
Urban Grandstand: But you’re clearly doing something. People are buying the music. It’s selling online through Amazon and you’re getting good reviews from people who are buying into it.
Rome Alexander: That’s the plan. I’m just trying to get it out to as many people as possible.
Urban Grandstand: Now you mentioned going to school. What are you in school for, and ultimately, are you trying to tie that into your music career somehow? Or would you say it’s more of a backup plan?
Rome Alexander: I’m an Anthropology major, and I’m a senior so I’m graduating this year. The plan as of now is to focus on music once I graduate. We’ll see how that goes. I guess you could call it a back up plan.
