Designing Conditions for Coexistence

A transdisciplinary project advancing practical principles and innovative thinking for regenerative , more-than-human design
Research Project
Designing Conditions for Coexistence views design as an opportunity to design with living systems in ways that transform conditions for coexistence with non-human living things . Led by Dr Nina Williams ( UNSW ) and Dr Olivier Cotsaftis ( RMIT ), the research project challenges the prioritisation of human needs in urban design : a form of anthropocentrism that continues to drive the unsustainable climate impact of urban design practices .
Through the delivery of practical interventions and concept-led workshops , the project aims to promote design with living systems for urban futures beyond utopian thinking . The first guiding principles of Designing Conditions for Coexistence ( including circularity and regeneration in design , pluriversal design thinking , care for more-than-human design processes , and relinquishing design control and mastery ) have been developed by academics , practitioners and entrepreneurs and published in the journal Design Studies and presented at design events and festivals in Australia . The project is currently developing practical interventions with industry partners to make those ideas a reality .
