8 MUSIC

The Arctic Monkeys are in for one of the busiest summers of their career with a sell out world tour to their name and headlining two of the UKs biggest festivals: T in the park and Reading and Leeds. When the latter of which was announced it made me think, when did this group of four lads from Sheffield suddenly become one of the biggest bands in the world, and how did they manage to crack the glass ceiling that is created by modern popular music in America these days.

Well for starters you look at the change in the image of the band. You look at a photo of Alex Turner from when "Whatever people say I am, that's what I'm not" was released and look at a photo of him now and you can quite clearly see the 1950s rockabilly wasn't there from the start. At the start he didn't care what he looked like, he'd go out on stage with a pair of jeans and a t shirt and just play his guitar. You look at him now and he's gyrating his hips and using every cheesy line under the sun in order to improve his performance.
